The dinner went off the rails the moment one of the boyfriend's old college friends looked the poster up and down and said, "Ohhh so *you're* the current one. Cute."
The poster had been invited out by their 31-year-old boyfriend to dinner with his old college group. It was supposed to be a normal night with people he'd known for years. Instead, it turned into a small, public humiliation served between courses.
One of his female friends, 30, arrived late. The poster says they had never met before. When she finally showed up, she didn't ask for a name or offer a handshake. She sized them up and dropped the line: "Ohhh so *you're* the current one. Cute."
The poster says they were stunned. Nobody laughed. Nobody corrected her. Nobody jumped in to say that was out of line. The boyfriend, according to the poster, "kind of chuckled awkwardly and changed the subject."
So the conversation moved on, but the moment didn't. The poster sat there in silence for another 20 minutes, listening while the table kept going as if nothing had happened. Then they excused themselves, left the restaurant early, and took an Uber home.
That's when the boyfriend's reaction arrived.
Later, he called and told the poster they had embarrassed him by "making it a thing." He said they should have been "chill" and insisted the friend "didn't mean anything by it." He also said the poster should apologize to her for leaving "like a child."
The poster, left with the choice between staying at a table where they'd just been introduced as "the current one" or walking out, had already made it. The boyfriend, meanwhile, was upset not at the comment, but at the departure.
Now the question is hanging on that dinner table: was the poster wrong for leaving after being publicly dismissed in front of a group that said nothing, or was the real problem the introduction nobody stopped?
