At 7 a.m. on a long weekend, a child knock on the door turned into four kids standing in the cold, and no mother in sight.
The poster says they do not have kids and, according to a cousin with four minor children, have a lot of "free time." That cousin had been making jokes for weeks about how the poster and their girlfriend should "take care of the children" while she headed off on a cruise with her new boyfriend. The comments were played like a joke. Then they stopped sounding like one.
"I won't make this post long, happened a few hours ago," the poster wrote after the ordeal began. The couple had an extra day off for a long weekend when they heard pounding at the door early in the morning. When the poster opened it, the cousin's four kids were standing outside, dressed for the weather badly, no jackets, just the cold air and the front porch.
The children said their mother had put them on a bus and told them the poster would look after "all of them" while she was away. They repeated the same line more than once: their mother had said the poster had "free time" and no responsibilities, so the poster and their girlfriend would be watching them.
The poster immediately tried to reach the cousin. Her phone was off. Then they called the new boyfriend. That call went straight to voicemail.
Still no mother. Still four kids on the porch.
The poster then called their aunt, hoping for some explanation. Instead, the aunt said the cousin had told her the poster had agreed to care for the children while she was on her cruise. The story had been passed around as if it were settled. The poster, meanwhile, was staring at children who had shown up by bus at dawn with no jackets and no parent to collect them.
"What do I do?" the poster asked.
The answer they were leaning toward was blunt: "Thinking of calling child services at this point."
Then came the update. The situation had escalated again, this time to law enforcement. "Cops have arrived at my door with DOCS. I did not call them. Will update shortly," the poster wrote.
By then, the children were still there, the cousin was still unreachable, and the porch had become the center of a very strange handoff nobody there had agreed to.
