A summer shopping trip vanished the moment a child looked at a dress photo and said, "That's soooooooo ugly. You look really fat. Isn't [my boyfriend] gonna think it's bad?"
The poster, who has no kids and says she has very little experience with children, had been at the park about a month earlier with her niece, Gabby. The poster was chatting about an event she planned to attend with her boyfriend of a few years when Gabby asked to see the dress she planned to wear. The poster showed her a picture of herself in it.
Gabby's reaction landed like a slap. She made a "yucky" face and told the poster the dress was ugly. Then came the part that stung most: the comment that the poster looked really fat, and the jab about whether the boyfriend would think it was bad too.
The poster said she was hurt. Her sister, Gabby's parent, was surprised by the outburst and said she would talk to her daughter.
A few days later, the sister brought Gabby over to apologize. The poster says the apology did not feel real. Gabby was rolling her eyes, looked angry, and "just got out the words." The poster thanked her for apologizing and told them to leave. After that, she says she stopped making any effort to spend time with Gabby.
Then came Mother's Day at the poster's mom's house, where the issue came back in a new form. Before all of this, the poster had promised to take Gabby shopping for summer clothes. Gabby asked about that promise. The poster answered that they probably would not go, and that Gabby likely already had plenty of summer clothes.
Gabby immediately got upset. Her defense was simple and repeated: "But I said I was sorry!"
The poster pushed back. She told Gabby that saying sorry does not automatically erase what happened, and that Gabby would need to prove she was not going to do it again, something she felt had not happened yet.
That set off a second fight, this time with the adults in the room. The poster's mom and sister said she was expecting adult behavior from a child and that canceling the shopping date was ridiculous. They pointed out that Gabby had apologized and had not been rude again. They wanted to know how long the poster planned to keep holding it against her.
The poster says she is unsure how to judge the situation. She worries the behavior could continue and that Gabby may become a bully. She has also described herself as "beefing with a child at my big age."
