A 21-year-old woman ended a four-year relationship after her boyfriend told her he would "have no choice but to dump me for someone that would give him kids."

The pair had been together since they were 17 and 18, and the question of children had been hanging over them for a while. She said he had long known she was "iffy about kids," while he had always wanted them someday. It had already put a "massive strain" on the relationship, but both of them had been trying to "cross that bridge when we get there."

On Saturday, that bridge collapsed.

What began as another talk about the future turned into a sore argument. He told her that "living without kids would make his life pointless," and that he would resent her later if she made him live that way. She said she listened and, at least at first, took it in stride. They were still young, she thought, and maybe she could change her mind down the line. For now, she told him, it would also be kind of unfair to force herself into having kids if she wasn't prepared.

That was when his tone changed.

According to her, he then said he would have no choice but to leave her and find someone else who would give him children. That hit differently. She said she had assumed he wanted kids with her, and that he would at least try to understand where she was coming from. Instead, the conversation turned into an open split over what their future could even look like.

She told him she was disappointed. He answered that he was equally disappointed in her for being selfish.

At that point, she got angry and broke up with him on the spot.

Since then, they have not talked.

The story centered on a relationship that had lasted four years but had never solved one major question: kids or no kids. For months, the couple had kept that question parked for later. On Saturday, later arrived, and the conversation ended with one partner saying a child-free life would be meaningless, the other saying she could not force herself into parenthood, and both walking away feeling let down.

She was left with the memory of the line that changed everything: he would "have no choice but to dump me for someone that would give him kids."
