Friendship Fallouts·
THE PLANT-BASED FALLOUT
At a big vegan dinner, one guest's non-vegan dish triggers a charged exchange over a host's plant-based rule and a night of hurt feelings.
Was that a fair line, or too strict?

A vegan dinner ended with one guest being accused of bringing "animal products into her home", after she arrived with both vegan and non-vegan food.
The dinner was hosted by Hannah, 23, who had invited a group of friends over and sent a message asking everyone to bring something to share. In that message, Hannah wrote, "It would be awesome if you all could bring plant-based dishes so everyone can try everything."
One guest, 22, said she did not take that as a hard rule. She read it as a suggestion, not a requirement. So when the night came, she showed up with two dishes: empanadas de pino, which are not vegan, and sopaipillas con pebre, which are vegan.
She says she made sure the food was clearly labeled, with a visible tag showing which dish was vegan and which was not.
At the dinner, Hannah did not eat any of the food the poster brought. The poster later said the whole point was that she had brought something Hannah could eat too, and she did not think it would be a problem because the two had previously eaten non-vegan food there plenty of times.
But Hannah was visibly upset during the gathering. Later, she texted the poster, saying she was "really disrespectful for bringing animal products into her home."
The poster apologized. Still, she said she did not think it was "that big of a deal," since she had not forced Hannah to eat anything and had also brought a vegan option.
What makes the situation murkier is that this was not a tiny dinner with a few strict rules and no wiggle room. The poster later clarified that there were 27 people there and more than 20 different dishes on the table, with most of them vegan.
So the clash came down to one thing: Hannah's invitation asking for plant-based dishes, and one guest who treated that request as flexible enough to include a meat-filled dish alongside a vegan one.
The result was not a quiet disagreement. It turned into a direct text message, a hurt host, and a guest left wondering whether bringing a clearly labeled non-vegan dish to a vegan friend's large dinner was a crossing of the line.
