TEXTS AT THE PARK
At a park, a writer and their dad misread a casual text, turning a simple invite into a stubborn clash before they finally agree to a new time.

The dad was already at the park, wondering where the writer had gone. The problem was simple: the writer believed the walk had been canceled.
The plan had started normally enough. The writer and their dad were going to meet up at a park and walk together. The writer suggested 5:30 and mentioned bringing their new dog along, since it was a park and the puppy likes to walk and run.
Then came the text that changed everything. The writer read the dad's message as a clear sign he did not want to meet that day. So the writer stayed home.
By 6:20, the dad called from the park.
He was there, waiting, and confused about why the writer had not shown up.
The writer repeated what the dad had texted, explaining that the message read like he had backed out of the plan. But the dad did not hear it that way. He kept saying, "You must have misunderstood my text."
After hearing that a couple of times, the writer finally pushed back. "No I did not misunderstand your text, your text was that you didn't want to meet today," the writer said.
The back-and-forth turned the missed walk into a text-message dispute. One person had gone to the park expecting company. The other had stayed away believing the invitation had been withdrawn.
In the end, the two set a new time for the next day. And this time, the dad apparently made the warning plain: the writer "better show up."
