THE SECRET CRUSH OUTED

A mother walked into the living room and publicly told a 14-year-old girl that a boy had a huge crush on her, right in front of his friends, and right in front of the girl he was actually trying to keep it secret from.

The fallout started earlier, in a family of five with a 37-year-old father, a 37-year-old mother, a ninth-grade son nicknamed Sonny, and two daughters. Sonny had been spending time with two girls: Tina, a 10th-grader, and Chris, a 9th-grader. When his mother pressed him about which one he liked, Sonny finally admitted, "it's a different girl." He said it was Chris, but added that "Chris knows" only because he had told his mother in confidence. It was "a secret," he said, because "my friends will make fun of me."

He even explained why he thought they would. Chris, he told his mother, was "the heaviest girl in their grade," had "terrible skin," and was "a tomboy." The point was simple: he liked her, but he did not want the whole school knowing.

Then came Saturday.

Sonny had friends over, five boys, plus Chris, Tina, and another girl. At some point during the visit, the mother walked into the living room and said to Chris, plainly, "Sonny has a huge crush on her."

Chris left immediately.

The rest of the kids followed earlier than planned, and the house was left with slammed doors and a furious son. Sonny did not say a word to either parent, but every door he used got thrown shut behind him. That night, the father told his wife she was a jerk. She answered that she was "trying to prevent our son from becoming a bully." He said there was a better way. She pushed back and asked what if one of their daughters were in Chris's position, and whether he would hide his feelings if the two kids went to the same high school. The argument ended with her sleeping in the guest bedroom.

Later, the father updated the story with more fallout. He said he heard from Tina's mom that Chris was indeed humiliated. At first, Chris thought it had to be "a cruel prank." Then Sonny confirmed it was real. Chris said her feelings were hurt, and that she couldn't like someone who was so embarrassed for people to know he liked her.

The damage spread through the friend group, too. Sonny was reportedly even more upset with his parents than before. Some of the friends thought the whole thing had been a prank. Others were saying there was something wrong with the mother mentally. The people Sonny was talking to most about it, the father said, were Tina and Tina's mom.
