RATTLE AT THE DOOR

A tense neighbor dispute unfolds as one tenant pieces together who has been rattling the door, questioning trust, safety, and the quiet threat lingering in the hallway.

Was the silence proof or coincidence?

The apartment door had been rattled enough nights that the poster finally slipped a note into the neighbor's mailbox. The next day, the man on the other side came knocking.

The poster opened the door and stayed calm. Friendly, even. Then they asked him directly if he was the one who had put a note in his mailbox.

He denied it.

So the poster pushed a little further, telling him they had heard his door open and then their own handle wiggle. He denied that, too. He kept insisting he had not been touching the door at all, even as the poster stood there with the same complaint that had brought them to this point in the first place: someone had been messing with their apartment entrance, repeatedly, and they were tired of it.

The poster told him it was not just annoying. It was waking them up, along with their boyfriend.

"It actually wakes up me and my boyfriend," they said.

At that, they backed off. They apologized, closed the conversation, and shut the door. Afterward, they checked the locks again. There were two locks and a chain, and the poster said they were checking them multiple times a day now.

Then came the next morning.

For the first time in a long while, there was no door handle rattle.

"For the first time in AGES, no door handle rattle!" the poster wrote.

That silence pointed in one direction. The poster took it as evidence that the neighbor had been the one doing it all along.

And even with the quiet at their door, the night was not completely normal. Around 4 a.m., the poster heard the neighbor's own door open and close twice. But this time, he stayed on his side. No wiggle at their handle. No attempt at their lock. Just the sound of his door, out there in the hall, opening and shutting in the dark.

The poster summed up the whole situation with a mix of caution and sarcasm: "We're staying safe and paranoid: the ultimate combo."

And after all the denying, rattling, checking, and listening through the night, they left one final line hanging in the air: "some doors just aren't yours, buddy!"
