A weekend dog-sitting job turned into a vet bill, a blowup, and a friendship on ice after one rescue dog came home sore.

The story started with B, a 2-year-old rescue dog adopted by friends J and P only about three months earlier. Before the adoption, B "had lived in a basement with little to no stimulation," and the poster says that shows. B was "noticeably under-exercised," with restlessness, whining, and too much excitement around other dogs.

When J and P went away for the weekend, they left B with the poster. The poster decided to give the dog more than the usual routine: longer walks, more attention, and on one day, about 10 km spread through the day.

By the poster's account, B looked better for it. The dog seemed calmer, more relaxed, and happier by the end of the weekend.

Then came the message from J and P after B was returned: the dog had "hip pain," and they had called a vet.

The vet visit did not turn up a structural problem. According to the poster, the vet said there was nothing structurally wrong, "maybe a strain or muscle soreness," and prescribed painkillers.

At that point, the poster tried to back off. They told J and P that they'd step back from walking or looking after B, so they wouldn't overstep and would respect how the pair handled things.

That's when the conversation sharpened. J accused the poster of not wanting to pay the vet bill. The poster says the bill had not even come up yet. In their telling, they would have helped if it had been discussed normally.

After the exchange, the poster sent another message offering to pay part of the bill, asking for the receipt, and saying "the friendship matters" to them.

But the tension didn't disappear. P later replied that emotions were high, that J was under a lot of stress, and that J needs time.

So the situation ended there: one weekend of extra walks, a sore dog, a vet bill, and friends now tangled up in accusations and hurt feelings. The poster is left wondering whether walking B more than usual was the mistake, or whether stepping back after being accused made things worse.
