DAIRY DEBATE AT DINNER
A guest brings a dairy-free cake that contains eggs, sparking a heated, confusing dispute over what counts as dairy at a dinner party.

The cake disappeared fast, until one ingredient turned dinner awkward.
A poster had been invited to a friend's house for dinner, and in that circle, there was a standing rule: "Our tradition is to bring food when invited to dinner." So when the friend asked if they could bring dessert, the answer came with one extra condition: "that would be great but it needs to be dairy free because her daughter stopped eating dairy."
No problem, the poster thought. "I know a great cake recipe with no dairy."
They showed up with the dessert, and it was an immediate hit. The cake was served, eaten, and clearly enjoyed. Then the friend asked for the recipe.
That's when the conversation veered into strange territory.
After hearing the ingredients, the daughter became upset and ran upstairs. The reason was simple enough: the cake included eggs.
The friend wanted to know why. Why were eggs in a dairy-free cake? The poster explained that the eggs were there for texture. "The eggs were responsible for the spongy texture," they said, and pointed out the obvious part: "There is no milk or milk products in the cake, no cheese, no butter, etc..."
But the friend wasn't satisfied. She said the cake wasn't dairy free.
"I said it was," the poster later recalled.
Then came the claim that changed the whole exchange: "eggs are dairy."
The poster pushed back. "Dairy is milk and milk products to my understanding," they said. The friend had a wider definition. "dairy is anything that comes from an animal."
So the poster tried to test that logic with a question: "I asked if honey is dairy then."
The friend said no, "because bees are insects."
At that point, the poster admitted they were confused. "I've never heard of eggs being dairy before."
The conversation ended with an apology, though the poster could tell the friend was still upset. What started as a simple dinner contribution had turned into a debate over what counts as dairy, with a cake at the center of it and a daughter running upstairs in the middle of the revelation.
