Mike got himself uninvited from his sister's wedding the hard way: by bullying her for years, then trying one last "prank" when she finally came home.
The story comes from a throwaway account, because the writer says their brother is on Reddit and they didn't want him finding their real account. At the center of the family is Mike, 35, the parents' golden child. He was babied, spoiled, and treated like the one who was going to make it big. As a kid, he showed promise at rugby, and their parents decided he was destined to be a superstar. He never put in the work. He also became a bully at school, which the parents brushed off. At home, he was worse.
That was especially true for Kelly, the younger sister, now 31. Mike liked to call his cruelty a "prank." One of the worst happened when Kelly was 15: at a wedding, he pulled her dress up in front of the whole family. The writer says they tried to defend her, but after leaving for university, there was only so much they could do because their parents "just dont listen to anyone."
Kelly did what she had to do to get away. At 18, she gave up her dream of going to St Andrews because it was too close to home, and instead went to Imperial College London. She stayed there, graduated, and built a life in southern England. She only came home for Christmas and once for the writer's wedding. The parents hated how little she visited.
Six years ago, Kelly met Jake, 30. The writer says she was overjoyed about him, and after meeting him several times, they agreed he was great and treated Kelly well. After that, Kelly came home even less. She spent one Christmas with Jake's family, then the pandemic kept her away for three years.
When Kelly finally came back for Christmas, Mike tried to make himself the "center of attention" again and moved to "prank" her by pouring water on her. Jake stepped in immediately. The writer describes him as 6ft 3 and trained in martial arts since age 4. He warned Mike that if he "pranked" Kelly one more time, he would "prank" Jake by putting his foot up his arse and his fist down his throat.
After that, Mike, the mother, and the father all had a problem with Jake. Kelly never came back home again.
Now Kelly and Jake are getting married in August, and the invite list left Mike off. The parents were furious. Kelly told them she'd get grandad to walk her down the aisle instead.
During a visit, the mother complained about Kelly and the wedding. The writer snapped, telling her the family had let Mike become the golden child, that he still lived at home with no prospects, couldn't keep a job or a relationship, and was a bully they didn't trust around their children. The writer also said Mike had terrorized Kelly for most of her teen years and that her only escape was moving more than 400 miles away and never coming home.
The mother told the writer to leave. Later, the father called furious, saying the writer had upset the mother and was siding with "a ungrateful little girl." The writer fired back that the father had been a bad dad to Kelly and did not deserve to walk her down the aisle.
Now the extended family is split. The mother is barely speaking to anyone and keeps crying. Grandad is on the writer's side. Grandma is upset by all the arguing. The writer asked if they were the asshole for telling their parents they "sucked a parents" and "deserved to be kicked out of my sisters wedding."
