The gender reveal cake was supposed to explode with color. Instead, it opened to a dead, flat grey.

A 23-year-old man who bakes as a hobby had been asked by his pregnant sister to make the cake for her gender reveal. He was good enough to get paid under the table for weddings and baby showers, so this was not a random favor from someone who had never touched a piping bag. He just needed one thing before baking: the baby's gender, so he could prep the filling.

He asked his sister for it. She refused.

"**Oh no, I want to be surprised too. Just make it neutral for the reveal and we'll all find out together.**"

So he pushed back. How was he supposed to make a gender reveal cake without the gender? His sister said someone would email him the information later. That email never came.

Days passed. The deadline got closer. He followed up again a couple of days before the reveal, and his sister told him, **"yeah, someone's taking care of it."** He took that to mean the information was on the way. It never arrived.

So, with nothing to work from, he baked the cake the only way he could: grey inside, grey outside, with little fondant clouds on top. He later said it tasted great, but looked grim.

Then came the reveal.

At the event, the cake was cut open in front of the family. No pink. No blue. Just grey. His sister immediately got angry. Her husband looked confused. People around them started murmuring as the moment collapsed into awkwardness.

The sister pulled him aside and said, "**Why would you make it grey? That's so passive-aggressive.**"

He fired back that he had reminded her he still didn't know the gender, and he wasn't going to guess or "**go full improv on someone's baby cake**."

The argument did not end there. His mother stepped in and said he had embarrassed his sister in front of the family and that he "**should've tried harder.**"

The poster's version of events stayed the same: he had asked for the gender, followed up again, and still never got the info. Without it, he made a neutral cake for a neutral reveal.

What everyone saw instead was a grey cake, a stunned room, and a family split over who had dropped the ball first.
