Tom threw up alone in his room while his half-sisters ignored his texts, and their mother came home to find the message marked "read."
That was the moment everything in the house snapped. The poster had left for what was supposed to be a two-hour call, asking her two adult daughters to keep an eye on their 7-year-old half brother, Tom. He had been sick in bed all day. Instead, an hour later, Tom texted her asking her to come home because he had thrown up again and couldn't get either sister to answer.
The poster already knew the relationship in that house was strained. She had two daughters, both over 20, who had graduated college and moved back in after failing to find jobs. Their home belonged to her late husband, Robert, who died six months ago after a long illness. Years earlier, she had divorced the girls' father, then married Robert and had Tom. The daughters had never gotten along with Robert and, according to the poster, "hated him because of what their dad filled their heads about him." Before college, they had lived with their father by choice.
Their father remarried last year, and the new wife caused enough conflict that the daughters stopped visiting. During college, the father had paid their rent, but that stopped after the wife fought with them. When the daughters asked to move in with the poster and Tom because they couldn't afford rent, she agreed anyway, even knowing they were distant with Tom.
They were in the house when she called. Both daughters' phones were busy. She came home early and found them there. One claimed she had been downstairs the whole time. The other said she had been using "kitchen appliances" and couldn't hear Tom. But Tom said he had texted them, and when the poster checked their phones, his message showed as "read" with no reply.
That was when she exploded. She called them "pathetic" and accused them of neglecting Tom on purpose. The daughters pushed back, saying she was making them act like the parent and placing responsibility on them. The poster said that was not the issue. "Tom is a kid," she told them. He had nothing to do with the conflict between them and Robert.
Then she told them they had "one week to move out."
The daughters argued and cried. They said she was being too harsh and acting worse then their dad's new wife. The poster refused to keep discussing it.
Now both daughters are giving her the silent treatment. She says she feels guilty, but also angry and worried about having them around Tom at all.
