My sister missed my wedding because her dog died, and now she wants me to stand beside her at hers.

I'm 28F, and I got married last year in a small ceremony with close family and friends. My older sister, 32F, was supposed to be my maid of honor. We've always had a complicated relationship, close in some ways, but she's also extremely emotional and kind of dramatic.

Two days before the wedding, her 14-year-old dog died unexpectedly. She called me sobbing and said she couldn't make it. She told me she couldn't emotionally handle coming to the wedding because she was too devastated.

I tried to talk her down. I offered to have someone bring her home early if things got overwhelming, just so she could be there for part of it. She refused. She didn't come.

I was crushed. This was one of the biggest days of my life, and suddenly I had no maid of honor at all. We didn't talk much after that. The whole thing left a mark.

Then, a few months ago, my sister got engaged. Last week, she asked me to be her maid of honor.

I told her no.

I told her I still felt hurt she missed my wedding, and while I love her, I just couldn't pretend like everything was fine. I said I couldn't take on that role as if nothing had happened.

She got very upset. She called me cold and petty, and said the dog was like her child. Our parents jumped in, too, and started pressuring me to "be the bigger person."

But I didn't change my answer.

Now the family is split over it, and the same sister who couldn't come to my wedding because she was too devastated is furious that I won't stand next to her at hers.
