Dinner almost turned into a food-safety scare when a husband checked on chicken his wife had declared "done" after only about 10 minutes, and found it still pink on the sides.
The 29-year-old poster says meals have been the main source of friction in his eight-year marriage to his 28-year-old wife. According to him, he has spent years having to watch her cooking closely because she regularly undercooks food, especially meat. Every time he tries to correct her, he says, she waves it off as him being "picky."
The complaints start with the basics. He says even something as simple as rice turns into a back-and-forth, with her asking questions like, "are you sure? That seems like a lot of water." Her answer, he says, is often some version of, "Maybe that's how you like it, but I don't want it so mushy." He says the same problem shows up with pasta, vegetables, bread, and meat.
The issue gets worse when she cooks for friends. He says she prides herself on making everything herself, but the results can be off: some dishes come out over salted, others undercooked. Over time, he says, friends have been coming to fewer and fewer dinner invitations.
The breaking point came with chicken. He says he went to shower while she cooked, and when he came back she told him dinner was ready. She said she had pan-seared the chicken first, but the timing seemed impossible to him. When he checked, the meat was still pink on the sides.
That's when he snapped. He told her she was going to "kill someone one day" by serving raw meat and added, "That's food safety number 1." She pushed back, saying she thought it was cooked and explaining that her mother never showed her how to make chicken while she was growing up.
He fired back harder: "Well you're almost thirty, that's no excuse for not knowing how to cook at all."
Now she is upset, and he says he may have been too harsh. But he also says this has gone on for eight years, and he has been "nice about it" the whole time.
