Cici bought the dress her bridesmaid had *almost* chosen as her wedding dress, and now she is bracing for the fallout.
Jakob, 27, says his fiancée Cici, 26, is "very stressed" over a dress problem involving Abigail, 25, the friend she's known for about five years. The two women have never fought, and they're each serving as bridesmaids in the other's wedding. But there's one dynamic that has always worn on Cici: Abigail tends to "drop" visit announcements out of the blue, then push for time together even when Cici already has plans, is sick, or simply isn't free.
"yes! I'm totally free!" is not always the answer Cici can give, Jakob says, even though Abigail seems to expect it.
A couple of months ago, the friendship took a turn into full wedding mode. Cici and Abigail each asked the other to be in their weddings, and both said yes. Not long after, Abigail took Cici dress shopping with her family.
That trip went smoothly. Abigail tried on close to ten dresses, narrowed it down to two, and eventually chose dress number one after Cici and Abigail's family all agreed it was the right pick.
Several months later, it was Cici's turn. She went dress shopping with her own family, bought a dress, then changed her mind about a month later and returned it with only three months left before the wedding. The very next day, she went back to the same shop because it had cheaper dresses.
Cici told the employee she only wanted ballgown styles, but after trying on about six dresses, she put on a fitted dress and loved it. Her family told her they knew "that this was the one the second she walked out in it." Cici felt confident and beautiful.
Then she realized the dress was the same one Abigail had nearly picked.
Her heart sank. Cici said she couldn't buy it because Abigail would probably be upset. But her family and the employee both told her Abigail would understand. Cici bought it anyway. The dress was nonrefundable.
Now the wedding is getting closer, and Cici is worried. She fears Abigail could either drop out of the wedding or be furious if she finds out. Jakob says the dress issue has left Cici anxious, with one "almost" wedding dress suddenly hanging over both ceremonies.
